The Mercedes-Benz CL 65 AMG C215 was introduced in 2003 as the ultimate version of the CL-Class luxury coupé and a showcase for AMG’s engineering capabilities. Based on the W220 S-Class platform, it combined the refinement of Mercedes-Benz’s flagship saloon with a two-door coupé body and considerably more performance.
From the outset, the CL 65 AMG was conceived as a car that combined extreme performance with exceptional comfort – a formula with very few direct rivals at the time.
Under the bonnet sits a 6.0-litre M275 AMG biturbo V12, producing 612 PS and an electronically limited 1,000 Nm of torque. Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels through a five-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT automatic transmission.
Despite its size and weight, the CL 65 AMG accelerates from 0–100 km/h in approximately 4.4 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Its defining characteristic, however, is the immense wave of torque available almost instantly, allowing the car to accelerate effortlessly at virtually any speed.
The chassis uses Active Body Control (ABC), an advanced hydraulic suspension system that actively reduces body roll and helps keep the car composed during cornering, acceleration and braking.
As a result, the CL 65 AMG feels remarkably stable when driven quickly despite being a large and heavy luxury coupé. The steering is more refined than overtly aggressive, but remains precise, while the braking system is engineered to cope with the extraordinary performance of the V12 powertrain.
The C215’s design remains elegant and understated. The CL 65 AMG is distinguished by discreet but purposeful AMG details, including larger alloy wheels, model-specific bumpers, distinctive exhaust outlets and V12 Biturbo badging.
Its pillarless coupé body is one of its most distinctive features. With all four side windows lowered, the car presents a completely open side profile, reinforcing the sense of space and exclusivity.
Inside, the CL 65 AMG represents the height of Mercedes-Benz luxury from its era. High-grade leather, wood trim, electrically adjustable seats and extensive comfort equipment create a cabin designed around refinement and long-distance comfort.
Despite the performance available beneath the bonnet, the interior remains quiet and isolated from the outside world, with subtle AMG details providing a reminder of the car’s more serious capabilities.
The Mercedes-Benz CL 65 AMG C215 stands out for its extraordinary combination of V12 performance, limousine-level comfort and elegant coupé styling.
It represents the peak of an era when AMG produced large, uncompromising flagship models with little concern for downsizing or efficiency. With its biturbo V12, relatively limited production and distinctive pillarless design, the CL 65 AMG has become an increasingly desirable modern classic and a particularly charismatic collector’s car.
