The Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy-R was introduced in 2014 as the most extreme and focused version of the third-generation Mégane R.S. Developed by Renault Sport with one clear objective – maximum performance – it quickly made headlines by setting a new Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record for a production front-wheel-drive car.
Under the bonnet sits a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four, producing 275 PS at 5,500 rpm and 360 Nm of torque. Power is sent exclusively to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox and a Torsen limited-slip differential.
The Trophy-R accelerates from 0–100 km/h in approximately 5.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of around 255 km/h. But outright power was never the defining feature of the car. Instead, Renault Sport focused heavily on reducing weight and sharpening the chassis.
Compared with the regular Mégane R.S. Trophy, the Trophy-R lost more than 100 kg. The rear seats were removed, lightweight components were fitted throughout and the car received an Akrapovič titanium exhaust, Recaro bucket seats and adjustable Öhlins dampers.
Together with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres and carefully developed suspension geometry, these changes transformed the Trophy-R into a genuinely circuit-focused machine while retaining full road legality.
Its engineering credentials were proven in June 2014 when the Trophy-R completed the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:54.36, establishing a new record for a production front-wheel-drive car at the time.
The result was significant not simply because of the lap time, but because it demonstrated how far Renault Sport could push a front-wheel-drive platform through weight reduction, chassis development and attention to detail rather than relying purely on additional power.
Only 250 examples of the 2014 Mégane R.S. Trophy-R were produced, making it one of the rarest and most desirable versions of the third-generation Mégane R.S.
Today, the Trophy-R is regarded as one of the defining Renault Sport models. Lightweight, uncompromising and engineered around driver involvement, it remains a benchmark among front-wheel-drive hot hatches and an increasingly sought-after modern classic.
