The Audi RS4 Avant B8 was officially unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show as the flagship version of the A4 Avant. It went on sale in early 2013, continuing Audi’s tradition of high-performance RS estates that combine the practicality of a family car with genuine sports-car performance. Production took place at quattro GmbH in Neckarsulm, home to Audi’s RS models.
Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 (4,163 cc) with FSI direct injection, producing 450 PS at 8,250 rpm and 430 Nm of torque. Shared with the larger RS5, this engine was one of the last naturally aspirated units used in an Audi RS before the brand moved towards turbocharging.
Power is sent to all four wheels through quattro all-wheel drive with a self-locking centre differential and a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission. The RS4 Avant accelerates from 0–100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h. With the limiter raised, it could reach up to 280 km/h.
The RS4 Avant B8 differed significantly from the standard A4 Avant not only in terms of performance, but also in its design and engineering. Wider wheelarches, more aggressive bumpers, enlarged air intakes, a sports diffuser and the trademark oval RS exhaust outlets gave it a much more purposeful appearance.
The body sat 20 mm lower, while the chassis could be equipped with Dynamic Ride Control for improved body control and handling. Buyers could choose between 19- and 20-inch wheels, high-performance brakes with optional ceramic discs, and a sports exhaust that made the most of the high-revving V8 soundtrack.
Inside, the RS4 combined Audi’s typically high-quality finish with clear motorsport influences. Sports seats, carbon-fibre trim and a flat-bottomed steering wheel reinforced its performance-focused character without compromising everyday usability.
The B8-generation RS4 is particularly significant as the final RS4 powered by a naturally aspirated V8. With an engine capable of revving beyond 8,000 rpm and delivering immediate throttle response, it represents an important chapter in Audi’s performance history.
Combined with quattro all-wheel drive, precise handling and the practical Avant body, the RS4 delivered everyday usability alongside performance capable of challenging dedicated sports cars.
The Audi RS4 Avant B8 was produced from 2012 to 2015, with approximately 10,000 examples built. Compared with the previous B7 generation, it brought more modern technology, greater performance and a dual-clutch transmission in place of a manual gearbox, making it faster and more efficient without losing the character that made the RS4 one of the defining high-performance estates of its era.
