The Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG R230 made its debut in 2004 at the New York International Auto Show, where it immediately attracted attention as one of the most powerful production roadsters of its era. It reached the market for the 2005 model year and sat at the very top of the SL range, combining the tradition of a luxurious grand tourer with the immense performance of a twin-turbocharged V12.
From the outset, the SL 65 AMG was clearly much more than a conventional performance derivative. It represented the technological and performance peak of Mercedes-AMG at the time.
Under the bonnet sits the 6.0-litre M275 V12 biturbo, producing 612 PS at around 4,800 rpm and a remarkable 1,000 Nm of torque, electronically limited to protect the drivetrain.
Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels through a five-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT automatic transmission. Thanks to its enormous reserves of torque, the SL 65 AMG accelerates with effortless but relentless force, reaching 0–100 km/h in approximately 4.2 seconds before encountering its electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
Its defining characteristic, however, is not outright top speed but the sheer amount of performance available almost instantly at virtually any road speed.
The chassis features Active Body Control (ABC), Mercedes-Benz’s sophisticated active suspension system designed to minimise body movement during cornering, acceleration and braking. It allows the SL 65 AMG to remain impressively composed despite its considerable weight and performance.
As a result, the car never feels like an uncompromising sports car. It remains a genuine grand tourer, capable of covering long distances in exceptional comfort while delivering extraordinary acceleration whenever required.
Powerful brakes with multi-piston calipers provide the stopping performance expected of a roadster with this level of capability, completing a technical package designed to combine effortless speed with long-distance refinement.
Visually, the SL 65 AMG is distinguished by familiar AMG details, including more aggressive bumpers, enlarged air intakes, distinctive exhaust outlets and, most importantly, the V12 Biturbo badging that hints at what lies beneath the bonnet.
Inside, high-grade leather, metallic trim and an AMG sports steering wheel create a cabin in which luxury and performance coexist naturally – exactly as expected from the flagship version of the SL.
Exact production figures for the R230-generation SL 65 AMG have not been widely published, but V12-powered AMG models were never produced in large volumes. As large-displacement engines have gradually disappeared from the market, cars such as this have become increasingly distinctive.
Today, the SL 65 AMG stands as a reminder of an era when luxury and extreme performance were combined with relatively little restraint. Its twin-turbocharged V12, huge reserves of torque and understated grand-touring character continue to make it one of the most memorable AMG road cars of its generation.
