Vehicle History

The BMW 320i E30 Cabriolet made its debut in 1985 as the open-top version of the hugely successful second-generation 3 Series. Unlike earlier conversions produced by external coachbuilders, the E30 Cabriolet was developed as a fully fledged factory model by BMW, bringing greater structural rigidity and a more cohesive overall design.

It retained the classic proportions of the E30 while adding an elegant open-top silhouette, with a stronger emphasis on relaxed driving and everyday usability.

Under the bonnet sits BMW’s 2.0-litre M20 straight-six, producing 129 PS and 164 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through either a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic transmission.

The M20 is smooth, refined and unmistakably BMW in character, with linear power delivery and the distinctive soundtrack of a naturally aspirated straight-six. Performance is deliberately understated rather than aggressive, with 0–100 km/h taking around 10 seconds and a top speed of approximately 190 km/h.

The chassis follows the classic E30 formula of front-engine, rear-wheel drive and well-balanced handling. Additional structural reinforcement was required to compensate for the lack of a fixed roof, adding some weight but preserving good rigidity.

The steering remains precise and communicative, while the suspension is tuned more towards comfort than outright performance, perfectly matching the relaxed character of the Cabriolet.

Its design remains one of the cleanest and most recognisable in BMW history. The low waistline, restrained bodywork and traditional kidney grille give the E30 Cabriolet an elegant, timeless appearance.

Depending on specification, the fabric roof could be manually or electrically operated. With the roof lowered, the car delivers exactly the kind of uncomplicated open-air driving experience that has made the E30 Cabriolet increasingly desirable.

Inside, the cabin follows BMW’s traditional driver-focused approach, with clear analogue instruments, straightforward ergonomics and high-quality materials. The four-seat layout also makes the Cabriolet genuinely usable for longer journeys rather than simply an occasional open-top sports car.

The BMW 320i E30 Cabriolet stands out for its combination of a naturally aspirated straight-six engine, rear-wheel drive and classic open-top bodywork. It offers the kind of direct, mechanical driving experience that has largely disappeared from modern cars.

With its timeless styling, distinctive M20 engine and increasingly collectible status, the E30 Cabriolet has become a highly regarded modern classic and a reminder of an era when simplicity, balance and driver involvement defined the BMW experience.
