Vehicle History

The McLaren 570S Spider made its debut at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed as the open-top version of the 570S from McLaren’s Sports Series. It was designed to offer a more accessible entry point into the McLaren range without sacrificing the qualities at the heart of the brand: low weight, precise handling and supercar-derived engineering.

The Spider adds open-air driving to that formula while retaining almost identical dynamic characteristics to the coupé.

At its core is the carbon-fibre MonoCell II structure, behind which sits a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 570 PS and 600 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed SSG dual-clutch transmission.

The 570S Spider accelerates from 0–100 km/h in approximately 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of around 328 km/h with the roof closed. The engine delivers sharp response and a progressive build-up of power, with the twin turbochargers providing strong performance across the rev range.

The chassis uses adaptive dampers and carefully judged suspension tuning to combine everyday comfort with impressive precision at the limit. Hydraulic steering – increasingly rare in modern performance cars – provides excellent feedback and contributes significantly to the car’s engaging character.

Thanks to its low weight and well-balanced chassis, the 570S Spider feels light, agile and predictable. The strength of the carbon-fibre structure also means that the Spider retains excellent rigidity without requiring substantial additional reinforcement.

Its electrically operated two-piece hardtop folds away in a matter of seconds and can be operated at low speeds. With the roof lowered, the sound of the V8 and the sense of connection with the surroundings become far more pronounced, without significantly compromising stability or comfort.

The design follows McLaren’s aerodynamic philosophy, with clean surfaces, prominent air intakes and functional details shaped around airflow and cooling rather than decoration alone.

Inside, the cabin is minimalist and firmly focused on the driver. Alcantara, carbon fibre and aluminium reinforce the technical character of the car, while the layout remains simple and intuitive.

The McLaren 570S Spider stands out by delivering a genuine supercar experience in a comparatively usable package. It combines open-top driving, substantial performance and precise handling with a level of everyday usability that is not always associated with cars of this type.

Although positioned as an entry point into the McLaren range, it retains the core elements of the brand’s DNA: lightweight construction, advanced engineering and a relentless focus on the driving experience.
