Vehicle History

The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Coupé C205 made its debut in 2015 as the flagship performance version of the new C-Class Coupé. It followed the hugely charismatic W204-generation C 63 AMG, but introduced an entirely new powertrain in the form of AMG’s 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine.

The C 63 S sits above the standard C 63, offering more power, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential and an even more focused chassis setup. By 2017, it had established itself as one of the most distinctive performance coupés of its generation.

Under the bonnet sits the hand-built M177 4.0-litre V8 biturbo, with its two turbochargers positioned between the cylinder banks. In C 63 S specification it produces 510 PS at 5,500–6,250 rpm and 700 Nm of torque from 1,750–4,500 rpm.

Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels through a seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT transmission. Instead of a conventional torque converter, the MCT uses a wet start-off clutch to deliver faster, more direct responses. The C 63 S Coupé accelerates from 0–100 km/h in approximately 3.9 seconds, while the AMG Driver’s Package raises the electronically limited top speed to 290 km/h.

The M177 is one of the defining AMG engines of the modern era. Despite the move from natural aspiration to turbocharging, it retains the deep V8 soundtrack and immediate sense of response expected from an AMG, while delivering immense torque across a broad rev range.

Combined with rear-wheel drive and the electronically controlled rear differential fitted to the S model, the result is a car with a distinctly playful and driver-focused character – something that increasingly sets this generation apart from newer all-wheel-drive performance cars.

The chassis uses AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive suspension, with selectable damping modes and AMG-specific suspension geometry. Compared with a regular C-Class Coupé, the C 63 is significantly wider and extensively re-engineered beneath the surface.

High-performance brakes, precise electromechanical steering and the wider track give the C 63 S impressive composure when driven hard, while adaptive suspension allows it to remain perfectly usable in everyday conditions.

Its design manages to be both aggressive and elegant. Flared wheelarches, enlarged front air intakes, AMG-specific bodywork, four exhaust outlets and a subtle rear spoiler make its intentions clear without overwhelming the underlying lines of the C-Class Coupé.

Inside, the cabin combines Mercedes-Benz luxury with a much stronger performance focus. AMG Performance seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel and high-quality leather are complemented by materials such as Alcantara, carbon fibre and aluminium, creating an interior that feels both refined and purpose-built.

The 2017 Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Coupé represents a particularly compelling point in AMG history. It combines a hand-built V8, rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed MCT transmission in a relatively compact two-door package.

That combination of immense performance, an engaging rear-driven chassis and the unmistakable character of AMG’s V8 makes the C205 C 63 S Coupé one of the standout modern AMG models – and an increasingly interesting modern classic.
