Vehicle History

The BMW M3 E92 made its debut in 2007 as the successor to the hugely successful E46-generation M3. It marked a major turning point for BMW M, as the M3 moved away from its traditional straight-six engine for the first time and adopted a naturally aspirated V8. The new generation continued the philosophy of a high-revving performance car that remained perfectly usable every day, and quickly earned a reputation as one of the most charismatic M3s ever built. The E92 designation applies exclusively to the coupé, while the saloon is known as the E90 and the convertible as the E93.

Under the bonnet sits the naturally aspirated S65B40 4.0-litre V8, an engine closely related in architecture to the S85 V10 used in the E60-generation M5. The all-aluminium unit produces 420 PS at 8,300 rpm and 400 Nm at 3,900 rpm. Power is sent to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed M DCT dual-clutch transmission.

With the manual gearbox, the M3 E92 accelerates from 0–100 km/h in approximately 4.8 seconds, while the M DCT version cuts that figure to around 4.6 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, rising to 280 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package.

The engine is the defining feature of the E92. At lower revs it is smooth and refined, but as the rev counter climbs it takes on an altogether different character, pulling eagerly towards its 8,400 rpm redline and delivering the unmistakable soundtrack of a naturally aspirated V8.

Although the chassis is based on the 3 Series platform, a substantial proportion of its components are unique to the M3. The car uses lightweight aluminium suspension components, an M Variable Differential Lock and near-ideal weight distribution between the front and rear axles.

The coupé also features a CFRP carbon-fibre roof, reducing weight at the highest point of the car and lowering its centre of gravity. The steering is precise and highly communicative, while the chassis strikes an impressive balance between everyday comfort and the ability to perform seriously well on a fast road or circuit.

The design of the E92 M3 is still regarded as one of the most successful in BMW M history. Its distinctive carbon-fibre roof, flared wheelarches, aluminium bonnet with its prominent power dome, M side vents and four exhaust outlets give it an aggressive yet restrained appearance.

Inside, deeply bolstered sports seats, an M steering wheel and traditional analogue instruments create a strongly driver-focused environment. High-quality materials and solid build quality also ensure that the M3 remains a comfortable and usable road car.

Approximately 40,000 E92 M3 Coupés were produced, making it less common than its E46 predecessor. As the only generation of the M3 to feature a V8 engine, and with no turbocharging involved, the E92 has steadily established itself as a modern classic and an increasingly sought-after enthusiast car.

The BMW M3 E92 represents the high-water mark of BMW M’s high-revving naturally aspirated era. It combines the unique S65 V8, rear-wheel drive, a beautifully judged chassis and genuine everyday usability in one remarkably complete package.

For many enthusiasts, it is also one of the last truly analogue-feeling M3s – a car that delivers a direct, mechanical driving experience and comes from an era when character, response and involvement mattered just as much as outright numbers.
